Some people who don't understand retail culture will think negatively toward this system. Having or running a brick and mortar store is not an easy business. unless you're a small team but are just full of genius and know the ins & out of good retail selling and know the culture or they are a big brand that are established and are backed up with a deep pocket ( not often they can have this luck to have people that have stable backup).
In my opinion customers are spoiled by getting hype items nowadays, getting a chance to buy items without gimmicks. getting raffle tickets for free / sitting / camping early to become first in line to get what you want .
And very often release hype shoes turn out sour with less organization and heavy crowd mob mentality taking over the event.
The release turnout usually turns bad and gets canceled by the brand because it's not safe for the public, not good for the brand image and customers that want to get the product will never get it.thats why they sell it as limited , cause the scares of not getting it are what they are trying to sell. not only will the whole thing turn out bad, usually the store will get fined too sometimes by police or other entities.
Then there are many factors that can make it turn out bad too, not only not organize properly (so people blame the store if it turns out bad, even though they are trying their best with the minimum budget that they have because the store finance is not as good because of sales).
Another X factors, such as people that bring mobs mentality take be part of the event not only cause they want the shoes, Reselling bring their team and fighting for their pair and have Jockeys to attend the event and not the actual reseller . Even random people just want chaos for the sake of fun with no responsibility.
You can prepare so much security, but if on the day, the percentage at the event “ 1 “ security against 50 people, for sure u cant control the crowd ,unless he is Chuck Norris.
Most of the people who attend this event usually 70 % are usually Resellers jockeys or resellers himself for reselling purposes, some are collectors who want to buy 20% and if they need money they will sell the items (they see it as investment purpose ). 10 % who are really pure collectors and wear them shoes but very rare.
As I learned from my experience , people who attend don't know the work of retail. they think by purchasing hype items only, they don't support the store to grow financially.
I can tell people who buy think the money they buy is for the store, but actually in the end , in the books, it's going straight back to the brand and not actually supporting the store. It goes back to the brand if you know how to read numbers.Other items that are not hype , which are general release or other Indi brands are the ones that support the finance of the store. What hype items are supposed to do is actually bring traffic to the store as an advertising purpose that the store exists and hope people come to the store to check items that are in store and ask questions regarding items that are in the store and that hype items that will be sold.
eventually, if they don't do well on other items that they try to educate in store, they will have less liquid to a quick turn around and the store will slowly die and in the end if they can't pay the big brand the next high heat they & will lose the account.
This might not be the case for others , if they have big pockets back up so the slow turnover can be covered by themself or you have a good team of sales and a hungry customer and culture of consuming. but if you don't have those 2 factors, as a logical thinker, they will be at a loss. whether they will do big sales up to 70% every year and make the brand look bad or big bazaar every time for them to survive with gimmicks. And that's the retail business..cause products have expiry dates and they have to sell them quickly to survive.
I live in southEast Asia, and our culture here is hungry and consumptive.
And retailing here always has more X factors. And each country has their own boundary in my opinion. Not only business factors / ethics and culture too !!!.
In South East Asia, the cost for Jokies ( people who line up and get paid to wait for days in front of the store ) are so cheap that people who really collect will have a very hard time getting it, unless u know the people inside or owner and be part of their VIP list. Especially if it's in store release.they come just for hype, release sent by reselling to grab the shoes and come by trucks ( minimum 10 people per group or even online drivers that are ready to standby in that area of the store. If they don't have customers to drive or send items from their online driver apps, they come to the store on that day & not even 5 minutes before it is released they are in front of the store and show up with their mobile phone and ask the store assistant the hype shoes pic.
For sure they don't know the culture, they never buy items in the store to support the store to survive.
If the store team knows how to kick their Jokies out, it's a different store,(you should give a raise on their pay wages ) but mostly they don't care, just think of a quick buck, so the event is over because it's a big hustle to kick them out. or maybe they might work with a reseller too underground. In the end it's back to the management to control the store team.
If the system happens ( buying items, more positive things can happen in my opinion).
With brands such as Nike / Jordan or other big brands, the buying items before you buy hype. I think they had their share of success.if u have a positive thinking, they are trying to share and help the store that they support get better recognition by not only dropping at their store, help the store to have more finance too, move stock easier that might be stuck and not only just sell just the hype shoes.
“ if that system put in place “
It kills 3 birds with one stone
Kill the first bird. With hype shoes that are in store release and not digital, resellers will have to spend more money than they usually do. Not only they only pay the Jockey cheaply, they now have to spend a few items too, to fill their requirements. Maybe he had to double or triple the cost of paying the jockey for items ( they don't know which items to get), and then pay for the shoes too. it will help less the opportunity to those resellers and may kill their business in the end and have a bigger chance to who wants to get the shoes to actually wear.
kill the second bird, people who buy just because of culture will still support it and actually like to buy. And it ok with buying other items because they know it to support the store and culture and want to dress a certain way with their new hype shoes or just to add more drip for their wardrobe line up + collect certain things and love to spend things in the store. So it helps them to confirm them buying more cause its a push for them to consume.
In my country this culture is new for general people and they want to take part and try to be part of the culture and support the store type of mentality.
Kill the 3rd bird. Buying cheap items for extra sale is not like its new, people in foot locker or JD get extra points in their sales to sell socks / insoles or even heavy items such as T-shirts or cleaning kits.
By buying socks, T-shirts, Accessories or even high items for points, it might be a small amount to achieve the mark to get raffle tickets, to get the chance to buy hype items. Not only can it help generate an economy for the store for it to survive , it helps get them more money to supply the store by more items , maintain the store and pay hype for the future to the brand and the account dont get shut down. With that the store has money to get better security too for the next event.and kill the reseller who wants nothing but the hype shoes and not supporting the store.
I have my share of experience in this situation. I have taken an excel course / crash course in my past life when I was in retail and built the culture of retail with stores that had the highest account in the country. The system was put into place and does help control the crowd as well that helps me and the team become successful, bring awareness and help move dead stock items and kill them jockeys at the same time.
Luckily the team that was under me was always working with one vision to get the best sales , help make culture alive positively and kill resellers and their jockeys.
it does help hold the brand name to a good standard. Sales are good in store and it helps grow the culture in store on sale in a positive way and healthier customers too that help support the store.good environment.
In the end people appreciate the movement that we were doing till now, they tell me everytime i meet them randomly, that the era that was my team is the best era, people who love the culture like it !, the people who wants to wear them shoes on feet might have the chance to buy them fairly and the proceed are good and safe and people supporting the store
if God put me back to that life again, I know that formula worked and from then i will tell the brand again to do it to help the culture back. isnt it time for them to help the culture ?
THE FORMULA
" Kill 3 birds with 1 stone."
